Lord Krishna exhibited is wonderful pastimes as cowherd in His transcendental abode of Vrindavan dham. He appeared among cowherds and Vrindavan itself was during His time was an agrarian community. Nanda Maharaj the foster father of Krishna was the King of the cowherds. Generally in the modern civilization agrarian life is associated with extreme poverty and destitution. Contrary to this modern agrarian life Nanda Maharaj and his community of cowherds not only lived in self-sufficient, self-sustained, and localized communities, but they flourished and prospered. It is said that Maharaj Nanda had under his care thousands of cows and each of his village folk their own. All of them prospered just by cultivation and cow protection.Their economic model was based on use of land for agricultural produce and cows for producing the most valuable food the milk. Milk was used as a means tomake all kinds of excellent foodstuff and economy flourished. Bulls were used to till the land. Thus cows and bulls were intrinsic part of their community, infact the land and cows were likened to mother and the bull to the father, they are respected and treated as such.

Hare Krishna movement Vrindavan aims to nurture and promote this rural or agrarian life and to showcase to the world at large that self-sufficient, self-sustained and localized communities as alternatives to current strife ridden urban driven economies. Hare Krishna movement Vrindavan envisions to conceive and demonstrate that such a community can be established in Lord Krishna’s own place. Vrindavan has over the years transformed into a city of temples it will be difficult rewire this setting and make it into agrarian community. But in location nearby in Braj a community based on farming and dairy driven by rural economy can be established to show case an alternative model. This is being conceived and planned by Hare Krishna Movement Vrindavan.

As a precursor to this Hare Krishna movement Vrindavan has established a traditional facility to nurture and protect some of the indigenous cow breeds of India. The Indigenous cow breeds of India are distinct from the hybrid cows of the modern dairies. The cows in the modern dairies are nothing but milk making machines to be exploited. Whereas the cows in gaushala(shelter for cows) of HKM Vrindavan are cared for like mothers and protected.They produce bountiful milk which is used predominantly for non-commercial purposes.
